Clay Dragon Exercise

Some shading exercise on clay.

The model can be downloaded from the Stanford 3D Scanning Repository and consists of around 7 million triangles. All HDR images I used are courtesy of Paul Debevec.

The main intention was to try to find a way to quickly and believably light and shade a model without having to mess around with textures, UVs and crap. This bothered me because I see such great and talented modellers, like e.g. Giovanni Nakpil, with works beyond belief, but often poorly (if at all!) lit and shaded. It would be rather easy to give the digital sculptures that little analog, clayish touch.

A mel script to set up your model scene with the shader and proper rendering settings is available in the thread, see below. All you need aside is a nice HDRI, like the Uffizi one or similar.

Happy Ceramic Buddha Exercise

The inspiration came from Jeff Patton's Buddha test renders on mymentalray.com. The original model can be downloaded from the Stanford 3D Scanning Repository, the HDR images I used are all courtesy of Paul Debevec.

Its just some shading exercise, nothing special or something I would be proud of. Though I found it an interesting study on the materiality of glazed ceramic. It definitely needs more investigation. However, what's next on my list is vintage clay surface.

It was a great experience to do some 'classic' exercise and have instant comparison and feedback with all the other contributors. I felt like practising painting in an art class, simply great!

First practical use of my own created EI03 (visit: http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/sun/CIRL/Project/PhysIllumModel/physIllumModel.html for details) and hls (Hapke/Lommel-Seeliger BRDF implementation) mental ray shaders.

Special thanks to Gonzalo Garramuņo for providing gg_fakefur.
Very special thanks to Jeremy Pronk for creating IBL Tools.
Last but not least thank you Master Zap for the wonderful sss shader!

It was another test for my EI03 mental ray implementation. This BRDF provides a statistically-based reflection model for rough surfaces, visit http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/sun/CIRL/Project/PhysIllumModel/physIllumModel.html for details.
In the end it's just a little peek of what's possible when I seriously get into action and find the time to get some stuff done. I hope I'll find this time at some point, it's a shame I cant buy some..
